Scholar alerts can surface new citing papers, new work by an author, or new results for a query. The strongest setup uses a small number of focused alerts and treats each email as a lead to inspect.

A practical workflow

1. Start from the right object

For citations to one paper, open its Cited by results and create an alert there. For a topic, run a precise search first. For an author, use the author profile when available.

2. Use an address you review

Confirm the alert email and keep messages in a dedicated label or folder. Broad queries can generate many weak matches, so begin narrow and expand only when useful results are missing.

3. Verify before recording

An alert says Scholar found a possible new result. Open the citing record and confirm the relationship before adding it to a report, CV note, or impact narrative.

What to keep in context

Alerts and profile totals can update at different times. A new email does not guarantee that a public citation count has already changed.
